A memorable evening with Bob Edwards

Filed under: Miscellany — Barry Hawkins @ 11:41 pm

Once in a while you have those experiences that you know you are going to remember forever and probably tell your kids about, if you have kids. If you end up not having kids, that’s not the end of the world. Tell somebody else’s kids; you get to tell them cool things (to you, at least) and then you don’t have to deal with them outside of that. Anyway, I was able to attend Bob Edwards’ visit to the Conant Arts Center at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta tonight.

Perhaps the name Bob Edwards doesn’t ring a bell for you right away. That’s OK, I have the same feeling every time someone asks me what I thought of the game last night. Bob Edwards has been the voice of Morning Edition on National Public Radio (NPR) for about 30 years. My memories of Bob’s voice go back to my early teens.

Bob has recently retired from his position on Morning Edition and will be moving into a new capacity at NPR as a Senior Correspondent. I look forward to what he will produce. Bob is a genuine person, and tonight was a wonderful opportunity that confirmed the character he has projected over the air all these years.

Bob has a new book, and this tour is a part of its promotion. After hearing Bob share from his book, I know this book is going to be on my list for the summer. Edward R. Murrow and the Birth of Broadcast Journalism follows the life of the man credited with bringing broadcast journalism into existence. After hearing Bob speak about it, I would go further to say that he does not deserve credit for the journalism of commercial broadcasting that we know today. I can see why the subject of this book would have such appeal for Bob. Murrow represents his era well, and his determination, hard work, and willingness to suffer loss for the sake of integrity on issues are inspiring to me.

  1. This was indeed a great lecture. Very inspiring. For those not counted in the hundred odd attendees that night, you can listen to the lecture/interview in two parts on NPR.org.
Here is a quote from Bob concerning his recent book. “Most Americans living today never heard Ed Murrow in a live broadcast. This book is for them. I want them to know that broadcast journalism was established by someone with the highest standards. Tabloid crime stories, so much a part of the lust for ratings by today’s news broadcasters held no interest for Murrow. He did like Hollywood celebrities; they had no place on his news programs. My book is focused on this life in journalism. I offer it in the hope that more people in and out of the news business will get to know Ed Murrow. Perhaps in time the descent from Murrow’s principles can be reversed.” - Bob Edwards
